On January 9, 2021, the Forest Service opened the new Walkers Creek Trailhead and Uwharrie Trail extension at 6871 High Pine Church Rd., Asheboro, NC.  2.5 miles of new Uwharrie Trail connects to the original Uwharrie Trail.  The trail passes through the scenic and historic Walkers Creek Area  then heads south over King Mountain to the Joe Moffitt Trailhead and Little Long Mountain.  It continues south along Poison Fork Creek to Jumpin’ Off Rock Trailhead on Flint Hill Rd.

10 years ago ago this was fragmented and not walkable.  Now it is almost 10 miles of protected footpath.

Special thanks to following:

  • Andy and Mary McArthur who sold the property with the intention of it becoming part of the Uwharrie Trail.

  • NC Zoo Society, the non profit arm of the zoo, which used a bequest designated for land conservation.

  • Three Rivers Land Trust, which facilitated the project.

  • US Forest Service

  • Amy Grissom who donated 2 acres in the gap between the trailhead and Forest Service land.

  • Uwharrie Trailblazers Foot Trail Club, which built and worked with volunteer groups on the trail and trailhead.

  • Boy Scouts of America
